Die Expertise der AG Schwaneberg liegt im Protein Engineering mit evolutiven und rationalen Methoden. Die Methoden der Gelenkten Evolution wurden in 2018 mit dem Nobelpreis in Chemie ausgezeichnet. Die AG Schwaneberg nimmt auf dem Gebiet der Gelenkten Evolution eine führende Rolle ein (drittmeisten Publikationen; Web of Science, Suchbegriff „Directed evolution“). Die Forschung ist in fünf Abteilungen gegliedert mit dem Ziel, die Methoden der Gelenkten Evolution zu verbessern, neue Designprinzipien von Proteinen aufzufinden und die Translationsforschung für interaktive Materialien (Pflanzengesundheit; Medizin), Biokatalyse und Bioökonomie zu befördern. Entwickelte Evolutionsstrategien wie KnowVolution kombinieren computerunterstützte und experimentelle Ansätze, um ein effizientes Proteindesign und ein molekulares Verständnis der verbesserten Proteineigenschaft zu ermöglichen.
