NEOLIVER

Automated Generation of Dense, Functional and Perfusable Bioprinted Liver Constructs for Transplantation

NEOLIVER is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project aiming to address the shortage of transplantable organs by developing large, dense, functional and vascularized bioprinted liver constructs for future transplantation. The project combines patient-derived organoids and supporting cells to generate multicellular spheroids, novel synthetic hydrogels, laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) and extrusion-based bioprinting to precisely assemble liver tissue and its vascular network. These technologies are being integrated into an automated, GMP-conform manufacturing process, with the resulting constructs to be evaluated in an immunodeficient pig model. Alongside the technological development, NEOLIVER is addressing scalability, regulatory requirements, clinical validation and patient acceptance, with the longer-term objective of preparing bioprinted liver constructs for first-in-human clinical trials as a potential alternative to donor-organ transplantation.
