Utilizing Chitosan-RNA-protein microgels as delivery system for RNA-mediated gene modulation in plants (SPP 2416)

RNAs enable the modulation and interference with gene expression at a transcriptional and translational level. The same applies if RNA sprays are to substitute conventional pesticides or be used to study gene function in plants. However, insufficient cuticular and cellular uptake is limiting the efficiency of RNA sprays. The central goal of this sub-project is to develop microgels designed from tailored chitosans (Codeχ) via mechano and wet chemical methods, which can load efficiently RNAs and transport them through the cell wall. This shall guarantee the highest effectiveness and broad applicability of RNA sprays by increasing the cellular uptake of exogenously applied RNAs.
