ULTIMATE

Bottom-Up generation of atomicalLy precise syntheTIc 2D MATerials for high performance in energy and Electronic applications

Multiple disciplines and sectors exploit the boundless potential of synthetic 2D materials

The 'graphene rush' boosted the design and fabrication of so-called synthetic 2D materials, namely (non-)covalent organic and metal–organic networks of monomers with periodic bonds along both orthogonal directions, whose unique nanostructures allow for exotic electrical, optical and magnetic properties, inspiring innovation in socioeconomically critical fields such as electronics and energy. Fully exploiting the potential of synthetic 2D materials requires thorough characterisation of their properties to support the optimisation of their tuneable characteristics. The EU-funded ULTIMATE project is training a new generation of young researchers from various fields to speed the precisely controlled generation of synthetic 2D materials for next-generation devices.
