Mend the Gap
Transformative Biomaterials Platform for Spinal Cord Repair
A multidisciplinary team, called Mend the Gap, will investigate the use of biomaterials by injecting a special soft gel (Anisogel) into the site of the injury to serve as a bridge for growing nerve fibres. Laura De Laporte and DWI are part of the research consortium lead by researchers at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. It is a $24 million project to help treating patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).
Laura’s contribution: She and her team will continue to design and optimize the Anisogel, bringing it closer to successful application in larger, most realistic models of SCI, with the help and support of the UBC team. They will also collaborate with world leaders in the development and delivery of drug-based treatments, to realize an integrated approach that leverages the latest and most important research findings.
