Post-operative tissue overgrowth of affected organs and adjacent tissue after surgical interventions in the course of the healing process leads to a severe reduction in the quality of life of those affected and is consequently a long-term burden for the healthcare system. Anti-adhesive materials are used as a temporary barrier for preventive treatment in the clinic. However, established one-layer materials have significant weaknesses in terms of flexibility, durability, functionality or manageability. Electrospun bilayer materials based on functionalPEG star polymers can be tailored in terms of these properties for improvedpost-operative wound healing and recovery of the patient.The product is of interest to SMEs in the chemical, textile and healthcare industries that manufacturehighly functional polyethylene glycols, work with the electrospinning process, or medical technology companies. The electrospinning process is easy to handle, cost-effective and scalable, and the two-layer product is available in just a few spinning steps. The bifunctional, hydrogel-like bilayer material is based on specifically functionalized and crosslinkedPEG star polymers. While the adhesion layer of the product adheres to the damaged tissue, the opposite side keeps healthy tissue at a distance and acts as a physical barrier between organs and tissues at the surgical site. Postoperative complications such as tissue adhesions are thus effectively minimized.
