Stefan Hecht elected as a member of Academia Europaea

10.09.2020

The Academia Europaea has elected Prof. Stefan Hecht, Ph.D., Scientific Director of the DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials, as a new member of the Academia Europaea. The Academy is based in London and was founded in 1988. It currently has more than 4,000 members, including 54 Nobel laureates.

The aim of the Academy is to promote education and research in Europe and to strengthen interdisciplinary and international exchange in science. In addition, the academy provides advice to governments and international organizations on scientific issues as an independent partner. Its members are leading experts in the areas of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, mathematics, computer science and technology, the social sciences and humanities as well as economics and law.

"The election into the Chemistry Section of Academia Europaea is a great honor and I am very happy about this special personal appreciation of my research achievements," explains Stefan Hecht. His research expertise is in the fields of macro- and supramolecular chemistry as well as organic material synthesis with particular focus on light-controlled and light-driven processes and polymerization on surfaces.

The Chemistry Section covers all areas of experimental and theoretical chemistry that are concerned with the study of matter and its properties. In addition, members are dedicated to the questions of how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances and how substances interact with energy. The section forms the interface to other disciplines and related fields of pharmacy, chemical engineering and material sciences, where research is primarily concerned with chemical aspects and less with clinical or engineering issues.

"As a member I can be part of an outstanding network, which I would like to use to foster interdisciplinary exchange in the future. It is a privilege to be able to advise on political decisions through the advisory work of the Academy," says Stefan Hecht.

About Stefan Hecht

Stefan Hecht studied chemistry at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley (USA) and returned to Germany as a junior group leader. After working at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim/Ruhr, in 2006 he became, at the age of 32, the youngest full professor in his field and Professor of Organic Chemistry and Functional Materials at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In 2009 he was a founding member of the Integrative Research Institute for the Sciences (IRIS Adlershof) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Since 2019 Stefan Hecht is Scientific Director of DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials and holds the Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University.

Stefan Hecht is internationally renowned and has received numerous awards. He is not only considered an outstanding academic mentor, but also knows how to inspire the general public interested in science. Moreover, he is co-founder of xolo GmbH, a company that is developing a new light-based 3D printing process.
