Book a Scientist 2020

02.11.2020

"Book a Scientist" is an event in which every research interested person has the chance to exchange ideas with an expert of the Leibniz Association for 25 minutes and to ask him or her questions. The event will take place in the form of a one-on-one interview online on November 10, 2020.

The DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials will be represented there by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Laura De Laporte, Dr. Barbara Dittrich and Dr. Robert Göstl, who will be available for discussions on the following topics:

  • Laura De Laporte - Artificial organs as an option for transplantation?
More than 9000 people in Germany are on the waiting list for a donor organ, but there are not enough organs or organ donors. Laura De Laporte tries to contribute to the solution of this problem: She is researching into the production and cultivation of artificial organs using 3D bioprinters.

  • Barbara Dittrich - How can we protect ourselves from disease carriers such as insects?
Due to globalization and climate change, mosquitoes, bugs, ticks and fleas pose an unprecedented threat to humanity. According to the WHO, diseases transmitted by these animals account for 17% of infectious diseases worldwide each year. In order to stop the transmission of diseases from insects to humans, Barbara Dittrich is researching innovative textile infection protection. This should stop the transmission of infectious diseases.

  • Robert Göstl - Will non-living materials soon be able to heal themselves?
Nature is amazing. It renews itself and continuously recycles materials. Following this model, we want to develop materials that react to their environment, i.e. that adapt to a certain environment and can automatically repair themselves when damaged. Robert Göstl gives an insight into the state of research and the possible places where such interactive materials could be used. Perhaps you would like to discuss further application possibilities with him.

In addition to the DWI researchers, other scientists from various Leibniz Institutes are taking part in the project. The different research fields are:

  • Economy, Work & Technology
  • Health, Aging & Nutrition
  • Language, Education & Open Science
  • Human, Nature & Ecosystems
  • Environment, Mobility & Energy
  • Brain, information processing & resilience
  • Politics, Society & Media
