Catalytic Microgel Reactions
Catalysts play an important role in many reactions, both technical and biological. Interfacial catalysts represent a particularly sustainable option as they can be recovered by simple separation. Microgels are known to occupy the interface between two immiscible liquids, qualifying them as potential candidates for such an application. The research group of Prof. Dr. Pich is developing a system that mimics the enzyme glutathione peroxidase and can be used as a catalyst for oxidation reactions. The system is based on selenium-modified poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels.
In cooperation with the group of Prof. Dr. Schnakenberg the influences on the catalytic performance of the microgels will be investigated. For this purpose, a microfluidic platform, developed by them, will be used, by which it is possible to control the movement of droplets through applying electrical potentials.
