Jan Thielen, M.Sc.

Jan develops various ultrasound-responsive platforms for the targeted release of therapeutic agents. Ultrasound offers several advantages for this purpose: it is already well established in medicine, non-invasive and can be applied with a high degree of spatial control.

His work focuses on developing and using different ultrasound-responsive mechanophores. These molecules respond to mechanical forces generated by ultrasound and can thus be selectively activated, for example to release therapeutic agents. Jan incorporates these mechanophores into polymers and combines them with various carrier systems, such as microbubbles and microgels. His long-term goal is to develop systems that could ultimately enable the targeted delivery of therapeutic agents in patients.

Students interested in this field are welcome to get involved through research projects or Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
