Iris Doolaar, M.Sc.

Iris Doolar has a background in biomedical sciences and is interested in the effect of mechanical information on cell behaviour. During her PhD, Iris uses the recently developed light-responsive hydrogel and microgel system to study mechanotransduction in muscular and epithelial tissues. This system allows for the generation of cyclical mechanical forces to mimic muscle contractions and breathing. The application of cyclical mechanical stimulation to in vitro models will elucidate how these dynamic forces are translated into biological processes like differentiation and barrier function maintenance.
