01.10.2018

The Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2018 will be awarded to Prof. Frances H. Arnold for her pioneering work in the controlled evolution of enzymes on December 10, Nobel Day in Stockholm. Through guided evolution, enzymes can be tailor-made for the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, feed and detergent industries, for example.
As every year, RWTHextern offers special lectures by experts on the individual Nobel Prize topics. This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry was presented by Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg to a broad audience of around 100 interested people on 5 December. From 1999 to 2001 he worked as a PostDoc in the group of Nobel Prize winner Prof. Arnold at the California Institute of Technology - Caltech. His 45-minute lecture "Sesame Open - Controlled Evolution for a Sustainable Economy" mainly dealt with the introduction to guided evolution and the explanation of important methods around the award-winning topic. The event ended with numerous questions from the audience.
