Mai-Thi Nguyen-Kim was a PhD student in the team of Professor Böker at the DWI until March 2015. Now, she is not only in the final phase of her doctoral thesis at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research in Potsdam, but has also built up a reputation on the video platform YouTube. Over the past year, Nguyen-Kim has talked about interesting and funny facts of science on her channel "The Secret Life of Scientists". She also set herself the task to overthrow stereotypes about scientists and “nerds”.
In her videos she describes the life of young scientists in and outside of the laboratory and satirizes certain characters. By now, more then ten thousand viewers are watching when she talks about her time at the MIT-Massachusetts Institute of Technology or the renowned Harvard University and the every-day life of a chemistry student. In the comment section below her videos she also answers the questions of prospective students.
Recently, her work has also been noticed by the ARD and ZDF who are searching for up-and-coming talents for their project “funk”. Since the first of October “funk” is the new program of public broadcasters for young viewers. Numerous videos on cultural, social or scientific topics are uploaded on an online-platform. For that, successful YouTubers have been brought on board, including Nguyen-Kim. At her channel “schönschlau”, which translates as beautiful and smart, she observes everyday phenomena from a scientific perspective. In her first videos she explains the meaning of the word “hangry” and at which time you should drink your coffee in the mornings to gain energy.
