Die Kernkompetenz der Gruppe liegt in der synthetischen Biochemie und der chemischen Biologie, die zur kreativen Gestaltung neuer Proteine oder Systeme eingesetzt werden. Dies umfasst Techniken aus der Molekularbiologie (verschiedene Klonierungsverfahren, Proteindesign, Produktion und Aufreinigung), Techniken aus der Zellbiologie (Säugetierzellen, Hefezellen, Bakterienzellen, Gen-Editing (zB CRISPR), konfokale Fluoreszenzmikroskopie), Techniken aus der Biophysik (Elektrophysiologie), Vesikelbildung, Fluorometrie, Circulardichroismus) und Chemie (posttranslationale Proteinmodifikation, native chemische Ligation, synthetische organische Chemie, physikalische Chemie und eine Reihe analytischer Techniken).
