Dr. Ulvi Karaca
The aim of Ulvi Karaca's research project is to develop a novel photoswitchable polymerization catalyst to achieve the in situ control of sequence by simply switching the light on/off or change its wavelength. As a first step, activity control over an organic polymerization catalyst shall be realized by utilizing the electronic differences between the ring-open and ring-closed isomers of diarylethenes (DAE). The ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide to form polylactide is an attractive target, as it is efficiently mediated by a number of organocatalysts, in particularly, the bicyclic guanidine 1,5,7- triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). Inspired by the properties of TBD, a new DAE motif has been designed possessing a bicyclic guanidine functionality.
